As Executive Director of Women’s Health in Women’s Hands CHC, I note that many of the women who were coming to receive healthcare did not have Canadian status. Usually, they would come only because they were pregnant and had to deliver their child. When the birth took place, the child would not have Canadian status, because the mom did not have Canadian citizenship. This was happening very frequently, so the staff began to lobby to have the law changed. After three years of constant lobbying, they were successful in supporting the passing of a bill that children born in Canada, regardless of the parent’s status could actually receive Canadian citizenship. This was probably my greatest accomplishment.
