SUMMARY:COLOUR OF POVERTY - COLOUR OF CHANGE
DESCRIPTION:ATTENTION – all Colour of Change Network members – \n\nMoving the equity\, inclusion and racial justice change-making agenda forward in Ontario ! \nHOLD THESE DATES – May 22-23\, 2018 !!\n\n\nCOLOUR OF POVERTY – COLOUR OF CHANGE \n\n\nInvites you to its 10th Anniversary Provincial Forum – flyer-poster attached !!\n\n\n\n“Racial Justice – Lead the Change – A Community Forum on Past Wins\, Current Campaigns\, and Future Challenges”\n\n\nFor the past ten years Colour of Poverty – Colour of Change has been engaged in a broad range of racial justice change-making education and advocacy efforts and activities around the province – working at an international\, national\, provincial\, municipal and institutional level to bring about fair and equitable life chances\, life opportunities and life outcomes for First Peoples and peoples of colour. With the upcoming provincial\, municipal and federal elections it is time to assess what we’ve achieved – what challenges remain – and how to re-focus ourselves for the next five years !  We look forward to having your voices in the circle !!\n \n\n\nDates –\n\n\nTuesday May 22\, 2018 –\n\n\n6:00 pm – Keynote and plenary with reception to follow \n\n\nWednesday May 23\, 2018 –\n\n\n8:00 am – Registration \n9:00 am – Program Begins \n5:00 pm – Program Concludes \n\n\nLocation –\n\n\nUniversity of Toronto Faculty of Law 78 Queen’s Park Ave\, Toronto\, ON \n\n\nRegistration is FREE. Stay tuned for more information and Eventbrite registration coming soon !\n\n\nStay in Touch –\n\n\nContact email – colourofpoverty@gmail.com\nFacebook – both a “Page” and a “Group” – Colour of Poverty – Colour of Change \nTwitter – @colourofpoverty\, #racesEDJ \nWebsite – www.colourofpoverty.ca \nBackground and Context – More than one out of every four people in Canada are either Indigenous or a person of colour.  In Ontario\, almost one out of three Ontarian’s are either of First Peoples or peoples of colour backgrounds or heritages – almost 4.3 million Ontarians. According to the Canadian Census 2016 this number is made up of roughly 376\,000 Indigenous persons – First Nations\, Inuit or Metis and about 3.9 million persons of colour – which make up 2.8% and 29% respectfully of the population of Ontario. \nIn Canada and in Ontario we must not gloss over the historical wrongs committed against Indigenous peoples and peoples of colour.  We as Ontarian’s need fully appreciate how Canada’s colonial and “colour-coded” history continues to define and shape our society – the individual life chances\, life opportunities and life outcomes – starting with our relationships with Indigenous Peoples. \nIn follow-up to the Colour of Poverty – Colour of Change series of local racial justice change-making round-table conversations held in different parts of Ontario – Windsor\, Ottawa\, Thunder Bay\, Hamilton and Toronto in the Fall of 2017 – we again begin with a shared commitment to the full adoption and implementation of the 94 Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples ( UNDRIP ) – as we explore issues of equity\, inclusion and racial justice in Ontario today. \nThis 3rd Colour of Poverty – Colour of Change ( COP-COC ) provincial forum – being held in Toronto on May 22-23\, 2018 – will bring together individuals\, groups and organisations working in diverse areas of racial justice – with Indigenous Peoples\, with peoples of colour\, and with other of the related and connected marginalised groups\, populations and communities – as well as academics\, policy makers\, advocates\, activists and others\, to constructively discuss how to build a more equitable and inclusive society for all\, to learn together how to best live nation-to-nation Treaty relationships – upon which this country is founded\, and to discuss how we can best move forward a racial justice change-making agenda as we make good on our shared obligations as Treaty Peoples. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAttached background materials – to help best “seed” the advocacy priority-setting and strategy development conversation in Toronto on May 22-23\, 2018 if possible please review and familiarise yourself with the attached – \n\nPart 1 and Part 2 of the live-stream of our earlier joint Truth and Reconciliation Commission – Colour of Poverty – Colour of Change Public Forum – https://vimeo.com/album/2628501 and http://www.trc.ca/websites/trcinstitution/File/From%20Remembrance%20to%20Reconciliation%20(Nov%2012%202013).pdf

SUMMARY:The Hymns to Freedom Project
DESCRIPTION:Award-Winning Artists Corey Butler and Jackie Richardson Say: “We are better together”\nin Special\, One-Night-Only Original Performance\, The Hymns to Freedom Project \nClassical Music Meets African American Negro Spiritual Song In This Unforgettable Production \nThe Hymns to Freedom Project\nSaturday\, May 5th @ 7:00pm\nToronto Centre for the Arts\n5040 Yonge St. N\, North York \nTickets Available Here \nTORONTO — April 13\, 2018 — Award-winning musicians Corey Butler and Jackie Richardson are set to come together in one unforgettable night to say through song: “We are better together.” \nThe Toronto Centre for the Arts will play host this May 5th\, 2018 to Butler’s one-of-a-kind compositions in The Hymns to Freedom Project. \nFeaturing original compositions and backed by a full Chamber orchestra\, the evening will blend together messages of love and unity among Classical music and African American Negro Spiritual song. \n“The Hymns to Freedom Project communicates the ideals of love\, respect\, and unity to this and the next generation. All who attend can expect to be deeply moved and challenged by world class compositions\, musicianship and the message that\, “We are better together.” \nWith a hat-tip to Oscar Peterson in its title\, The Hymns to Freedom Project will lay bare the ideals of love\, respect and unity to both this and the next generation\, having offered up a unique private viewing experience to area schools during dress rehearsals May 4th. \nTickets are available for Saturday\, May 5th for $45. VIP tickets\, which include an invitation to the exclusive VIP reception to follow\, are $65. \nThis special evening is presented in collaboration with Zamar Music Productions Inc. and Jones & Jones Productions\, and is supported by the Ontario Arts Council. \n// ABOUT THE HYMNS TO FREEDOM PROJECT \nThe Hymns to Freedom Project comes at a moment in our society of heightened racial tensions particularly between members of the black and white communities. In recent times\, several decades after the abolishment of slavery and the Civil Rights movement\, we still witness repeated incidents of police brutality resulting in the deaths of innocent black men\, white supremacists rallies with participants bearing torches and chanting racist slurs\, and racially controversial remarks coming from the most powerful political figure in the world. \nBut despite what we read in the headlines\, this is not the full story. The Hymns to Freedom Project communicates the truth that love and unity are more powerful forces than hate and discord. Inspired by the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\, award winning producer and composer\, Corey Butler\, created a show featuring his very own compositions which will be supported by a large Chamber Orchestra and renowned actress and singer\, Toronto’s own\, Jackie Richardson. The orchestra is comprised of avid and skilled players from all over the Greater Toronto Area and represented by many different cultural backgrounds. \nButler’s compositions are a fusion of Classical Music and the African American Negro Spiritual and highlights the seemingly unlikely influences the genres have on each other as well as their similarities. The tension and resolution in the pieces is juxtaposed against the historical and current racial environment and puts on clear display that when united\, our differences can blend together to create magical masterpieces. \n// ABOUT JACKIE RICHARDSON \nJackie Richardson is an electrifying\, award-winning\, world-class performer and one of Canada’s foremost singers of gospel\, blues and jazz whose career includes performances in concert\, radio\, television and recordings. She has performed across Canada and in countries around the world. Jackie has received the NAACP\, Juno\, Betty\, Dora\, Jesse\, Gemini\, South African Women for Women Awards and Nominations. \nJackie was also presented with Lifetime Achievement Awards from The Toronto Blues Society\, The Canadian Black Achievement Awards\, The Ken Page Memorial Trust and The Canadian Equity Association. She holds a number of additional awards and honours that have been bestowed on her and most recently was honoured by PAL Canada Foundation. \nHigh on Jackie’s list are community and global concerns\, and some of her most vital areas of support is for The Regent Park community\, The Steven Lewis Foundation’s Grandmother’s Campaign (HIV/AIDS project)\, and The Princess Margaret Hospital.  Jackie is known to be very passionate about the need to bring more focus and support to children and women’s issues. \n// ABOUT COREY BUTLER \nCorey Butler currently serves as the Musical Director of the Juno Award winning Toronto Mass Choir. He has written songs with Grammy Award winning Hall of Fame inductee Carvin Winans and has played with some of the finest musicians and singers in Toronto including Jackie Richardson and Andrew Craig. \nCorey is also a music professor in the Music Industry Arts Performance (MIAP) program at Centennial College and one of the course directors of the York University Gospel Choir at York University. He continues to make a mark on the music industry in Canada having produced the Toronto Mass Choir’s 1st Christmas album\, “A Christmas Gift”\, and their most recent album\, “Made For Worship”\, both of which have won multiple GMA Covenant awards. \nIn addition to his skills as a piano player\, musical director and producer\, Butler also regularly conducts a 50+ piece symphony orchestra that has played compositions by himself and others from around the world such as Camp Kirkland\, particularly during the Easter and Christmas seasons. You can also hear his compositions on many of the recordings he’s produced. \nTo that end he has gained a reputation in that arena and is affectionately called ‘The Maestro’. \nCorey has a passion for composing music and producing concerts that address the social and cultural issues we face within our communities. With that said\, Zamar Music Productions Inc. was established to affect the lives of underprivileged and marginalized people by exposing them to music and musical opportunities and to establish musical development programs for children and youth\, allowing them to be exposed to a medium of expression they wouldn’t normally be exposed to. \nOver the years\, Corey has mentored many young musicians and continues to do so at the College and University levels. He has a heart and passion to see the legacy of great musicianship and musical literacy continue throughout Toronto\, especially within his ethic community.
